My Seed Catalogue Picks – Zone 5
When the seed catalogues start showing up at my house in the winter, I know it’s time to start dreaming of whats to come in my garden. Over the years I have come across some new and interesting seed catalogues and I wanted to be sure to share those with you.
Botanical Interests
This company not only has a variety of seeds to choose from but they are local and the most beautiful illustrations adorn their seed packets. What inspired this couple to start Botanical Interests is because they where finding that seed packets were not giving enough of the information needed to the gardener. This is why their seed packets are a gardeners dream. With illustrations, garden history, planting recommendations and seed starting details, you get all you need! Being a company located locally in Colorado, I have had much success with every variety I have tried.
A few of my favorites:
Baker Creek
The most beautiful seed catalogue I have seen goes hands down to Bakers Creek Rare Seeds. You might have spotted their Whole Seed Catalogue at the grocery store checkout counter. If so, its worth taking a peek. While you have to pay for that catalogue, there is also a free version which is much smaller that you can get delivered to your home.
There are so many fantastic heirloom varieties to choose from and many come from parts of Asia. If you are looking to try something new, I highly recommend them.
A few of my favorites:
Western Native Seeds
Western Native Seed specializes in seeds of plants which are native to the Rocky Mountains, western Great Plains, and adjacent areas. When possible, I look at including native plants into my landscapes as they are well adapted to their environment and are likely to thrive without too much fuss. Once established, they will provide a beautiful, low-maintenance and long-lived display that is both ecologically appropriate and environmentally sound.
Split leaf paintbrush, fringed sage, blue columbine.
Floret Flowers
I have just recently ordered from this company with hopes of growing more cut flowers in my gardens. The variety they have to offer and the beautiful photos from their flower farm have captivated me. Lookin forward to trying out some of these varieties.
