Why Start a Home Health Business?
Entrepreneurship and small business are seeing a renaissance and you are a renaissance woman. You are here because you want to discover a path to uncover your unlimited potential to help yourself and others live a healthier, longer life. The great news is that you have the potential to make this happen. Below, I will share with you the tools and guidance you need to get your home health business started.
Before we begin, let’s dig into why building a home health business is a smart decision.
Now is the time to get involved in the health industry. What we are seeing across the globe is an increased interest in natural nutrition and supplementation to live longer, lose weight and prevent illness. As a country we are looking for ways to prevent epidemics like obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart disease by natural means. No more masking our symptoms with experimental and costly pharmaceuticals, we want to get to the core of our health matters. Aging populations are also looking for support in being healthier and 30-40 year olds are beginning to supplement at earlier ages. Prevention baby!
Take a look at what the experts say:
- The Nutritional Business Journal projects that the vitamin, mineral and supplement market will double from creating $32 billion in revenue in the United States to over $60 billion by 2020. Source: Forbes Magazine: Nutritional Supplements Flexing Muscle as Growth Industry, David Lariviere
- A global market study on the supplement industry found that thanks to an aging population, interests in preventative care and rising disposable incomes, we will see a large growth in vitamin and mineral consumption across the globe. - In a consumer survey completed in 2013 by the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), 68% of adults reported that they have taken a dietary supplement, with the most popular being a multivitamins (52%) and then vitamin D (20%), omega-3/fish oil (19%), calcium (18%) and vitamin C (17%). What Do I Need to Know to Start My Home Health Business?
Not sure if you have enough knowledge in health and nutrition to get started? Depending on what you want to do, this does not have to be a barrier to getting started. The most important skill you will need in your bag is motivation and an excitement to learn.
One easy way to get started in your home health business is to join a trusted company that carries nutritional products and information, accompanied with a great training and mentor program. A great example of a company like this is Shaklee which has been around for 60 years and is the number one nutritional supplement company in the United States. With Shaklee, you have the opportunity to share products and information that will help improve people’s health as well as providing you with great support and training. Their compensation plan is rewarding and exciting. This company has transformed how I live my life and the health of those I love.
No matter what choice you decide to take at first, make sure to do your research and be open to learning. What I witness time and time again for those who are successful in the health and nutrition industry is that they are coachable and able and willing to learn and develop new skills.
If you are still not sure what you want to do just yet, not a problem! That’s what I am here to help you with. Let’s work together to delve deeper into what you want to do and how to get started. In the next section we will go over the top six tips to start your home health business. You can also download my full ten step guide below.
Ten Tips to Start Your Home Health Business
“I’ve come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that’s as unique as a fingerprint-and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of a service, working hard, and allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.”
Open up your heart and your mind. This is one of the most important steps to finding success and happiness in your home health business.
Take out your journal and a pen and get ready to dig deep, really deep. Erase all mental barriers about what is possible. This is your chance to dream.
Answer the questions below as honestly as you can. Do not let yourself be inhibited by negative thoughts or emotions. Let it flow freely. This is your journey where you get to say to the universe,”This is what I want to create in my life.”
- How do you want to feel everyday?
- What do you like to do in your free time?
- What makes you feel excited or passionate?
- What type of relationships do you want to attract into your life?
- If money was not an obstacle what would you do or achieve?
- What environment do you want to surround yourself with?
- How do you prefer to communicate your ideas?
- How will you feel when you help someone feel healthier?
- What will having a home health business allow you to do in your life?
How did it go? Did you feel challenged? Do you feel relieved, inspired or even surprised by what you wrote down? It’s amazing what can come out of this activity. We often do not let ourselves focus on our dreams and desires but this is an important step to discovering our underlying passions.
Next you should create a visual representation of your dreams and desires with a vision board. You can use magazine images, draw something or print images from the internet. Once you have these images, you should paste them together on one sheet. I opted to do mine on my computer by pulling images from Pinterest. The most important part is that it is reflective of the life you desire. Feel free to even use symbols to depict your ideas.
Take a look at this example that I created for myself:
When you complete your vision board, hang it up in a place that you will see it every day. Review your aspirations on this board each morning. Take time and imagine that all of these dreams have already manifested themselves and allow yourself to experience what that feels like. This activity helps you share with the universe your desires and opens your heart up to opportunities that will come into your life.
It may seem a bit magical, but dreams are. The best thing about it is that, It works! If you are really into the learning more about the power of vision boards and the life changing effects of visualization, check out these great reads:

What aspects of health most interest you? Do you want to become a personal trainer, a nutritional consultant, blog about healthy habits or create home workout videos? You may have many ideas but it is important to start to focus and narrow in on what you want to do. Precision in your vision will go far.
Focus on the ideas that excite you the most.
Next, start to think about how you can scale your idea. Where is the most profitability in your product or service you are offering? Talk to those who you admire in your life for advice and bounce those ideas around.
Still not sure what you want to do? No worries. Spend some more time on the vision exercise to unveil what excites and inspires you. The skill building part comes later.

THREE: Do Your Research
Once you find out what it is you want to do, look for mentors or people who are doing something similar to provide you with guidance and inspiration. Reach out to them. Don’t be afraid, one of these contacts could become instrumental in inspiring you to reach your ultimate greatness.
Not only should you research mentors, but you need to research who your ideal customer is. It is important that you understand who your audience is, what they are looking for and how they look for things. What are their concerns and desires? Knowing this information helps you to serve your customers better by knowing what it is that they need and how you can provide it.
You can start uncovering this information by answering the following questions.
During this activity you may discover you have at least 3-5 different types of major customer groups.
- If you could give your target group a persona what would his or her name be?
- What are their demographics? Age, location, gender, education, earnings?
- What would success mean to this person?
- What problems are they trying to relieve?
- What barriers to receiving your service or product would they see?
- What process do they go through before purchasing a product or service? Are they big researchers? Do they consult with friends or are they inspired by magazines or twitter feeds?
- What are their values?
- What interests them?
Really have fun building these personas. The more detailed the better. By really fleshing these out, you get closer to understanding who your customers are so that you can serve them to the best of your ability. Remember it is about connecting, creating community and giving value.
FOUR: Find Your Unique Gift
Now that you have a better idea of the home health business you would like and who your audience is, you need to think about what makes you different from others in the industry. How can you serve your customers best?
To do this, you need to see what other have done. Look at brands, product or ideas that inspire you. Jot down this information and add notes about what attracts you to these ideas. Think deeply about how you can make them your own.
Do you have a unique gift of photography? Do you enjoy creating podcasts? Are you great at speaking in front of crowds? Who do you know who may be able to help you develop your ideas? What creative new ways can you reach out to potential customers that maybe others have not tried yet?
To be successful, you need to be your brand and stand out in the marketplace.
With Kern Wellness and my Shaklee business, I am able to share information and products with others to help them lead a healthier lifestyle as well as providing those who are looking for ways to earn additional income. What sets me apart from my competitors is that I am taking my love of writing and photography to reach out to new audiences online.
FIVE: Set Goals
Okay we are halfway there. You uncovered the life you want to create for yourself with your home health business, you narrowed it down to what you want to do, looked into industry leaders, learned about your target audience and discovered how to stand out in a crowd.
You are now ready to set some G-O-A-L-S! Woo-hoo!
Jot this down:
Where do you want to be in 3, 6 or 9 months?
What about in a year to five years from now?
Start with the end game in mind by referring back to your vision board. You need to create a path of how you will get there. Jot down the steps that you need to achieve these goals into manageable chunks and organize them into a timeline that will work for you. Set timed goals for yourself and a reward system for when you achieve the larger milestones. Pay off your college loans, paint the house, a day trip to the spa with some girl friends? Or maybe ski passes or another adventure for your family.
For example, right now I have rewards in place for goals this year that include taking my family on a trip to Iceland and redecorating our master bedroom.
You should strive to set deadlines for yourself and schedule your tasks and efforts appropriately to reach these deadlines. If it’s not scheduled or written down, how are busy moms like you and I going to remember what it is we were supposed to do this week or next? If I didn’t have my planner on me somedays I am not sure I would remember what day of the week it is.
Find what works for you, use it and stick with it.
SIX: Provide Value
To be successful in your own business you need to make sure you are providing value to others. It is all about giving more than you take. Your customers will continue to come back to and refer others to you if you have improved their lives in some way and gave them more than they expected to receive from you.
Providing value to your customers does not just mean providing material value like freebies and discounts. While those can be great ways to provide value, you can also do this by providing inspirational messages or notes to clients, sharing new research or information, helping to research and solve an additional issue that they may have or sharing a referral with them when you do not have the answer or service yourself.
What I like to do for my Shaklee business builders is to send them resources, books and inspirational messages to help support them in the growth of their own business. When they have reached or exceeded some of the goals they set for themselves I like to show my support by celebrating them. For new clients, I like to help find out what health issues they may be having and directing them to information that can help them even if it is out of the scope of the services that I deliver directly through my business.
What ways can you add value?
