In a study published in the American Journal of Prevention Medicine (2008), conducted by Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research, researchers found that individuals who kept food diaries lost more weight. And the more records they kept, the more weight they lost. Those who kept a food diary for more than 5 days each week lost twice as much weight as those who didn’t. They were also more successful at keeping the weight off. Knowing you’ll need to write down the 50 potato chips or 10 cookies eaten while watching a movie can be a potent motivator for skipping them!
Clearly, there are great reasons for tracking what you eat. It helps achieve results. I appreciate a saying that I heard recently “if you bite it, you write it!” Tracking helps you be aware of, and honest about, what you actually are consuming on a daily basis. It can also help you stay accountable to your daily consumption of targets of each food group.
The American Cancer Society also recommends keeping a written record of your daily food and drink, including portions. This organization takes it further by encouraging including significantly more details such as the time of day you ate, the location, writing down the names of eating companions, or if you ate alone. Certain people can actually cause us to overeat, according to Beth Reardon, Director of Nutrition at Duke Integrative Medicine in Durham, North Carolina. Making a note of one’s emotional state can also be helpful; are you eating from boredom, to alleviate stress, or because you’re truly hungry?
Weight Loss Mobile Apps Can Track Your Meals
Writing down each morsel of food we consume, along with those other details, is tedious. There is no doubt about that. However, with technology today, it can be simplified. We all know that exercising more and eating less will help us lose inches and pounds, so why not add another element to your activity plan, to kick-start weight loss success? Consider incorporating a mobile app to your plan, to help stay on track and not continually feel as if you have to start over again every Monday. That’s a habit I tended to fall into repeatedly in the past. It’s a vicious cycle that we need to break.
According to the website SkinnyMS, there are three reasons an APP is a proven weight-loss aid:
- Self-Control – A food diary acts as a sort of gastronomic confession, making sure that you are attentive to each time you choose to eat something.
- Reference – Reviewing your food and drink intake daily can also make you conscious of patterns in your eating that may previously have gone unnoticed. This is particularly accurate if you are also recording how you are feeling before and after eating.
- Emotional Support – Using a food journal APP is a beneficial method of noting emotional motivations for the food choices you select. You may soon discern patterns of the foods you select at stressful times of day, or when feeling specific emotions. Knowing what you’re doing might help you make wiser choices the next time you encounter a comparable situation.
I found the following report from Shaklee research to be a real eye-opener:
“If every person who needed to lose weight lost just nine pounds, it would be enough to result in vast decreases in hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.”
WOW! Only nine pounds. Everyone can lose nine pounds with a little effort. What a huge health benefit that would result in. To feel that I have helped to drastically reduce my risk of those major diseases and conditions would make it all worth it.
Let’s do it…go for just nine pounds to start with. In the world of Shaklee, we call that your turnaround.
My Story: How My Friends and I Supported Each Other
Trying to lose inches and pounds is not always as easy as we originally plan it to be, so having a buddy, mobile app and other forms of support may be vital to your success. Last winter, I wanted to lose 15 – 20 pounds using the Shaklee 180 program and discovered that a lot of my Shaklee friends did too. To encourage success, we supported each other with weekly conference calls. Most of us lost some inches and pounds. That was helpful for me – I lost 10 pounds and a few inches from my waist and hips. But when we stopped our calls after 11 weeks, my progress slowed down and I never reached my ideal goal. This was before Shaklee introduced its new line of Shaklee 180 products including the mobile app for weight loss support.
This winter, I am dedicated to lose not only the rest of my excess weight of 6-10 pounds, but intend to go for a little “after-after” goal too!
How am I going to do that? With Shaklee 180 and the new Shaklee 180 APP for the iPhone and Android. This is a fantastic mobile app for weight loss! I have found it incredibly easy to enter my information on a daily basis. I set up my initial profile, and the app calculates a healthy caloric intake to enable me to reach my goal. I then add in my meals, which includes a Shaklee 180 Smoothie in vanilla flavor for breakfast (260 calories, with 24 grams of protein) and a cup of blueberries, which can be added to my smoothie, plus a Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Meal Bar (260 calories, with 20 grams of protein). I exercised today and burned 354 calories doing a power walk, while drinking plenty of water. My app is keeping track of it all, and allowing me see how many calories I have left for a Shaklee 180 Snack Bar or Snack Crisps (100 calories each) plus a healthy lunch and dinner.
